Welcome to APPALACHIAN PARIS / OAKLAND. This is a tour that you can take at your own pace, any time of the day or night. Our goal is to help you see the neighborhood with fresh eyes, to appreciate the people who came before us, imagine those who will come after us, and reflect on what connects us to the community we call Oakland.
The tour begins at the corner of Bouquet and Forbes, across the street from Essie's "O" Hot Dog Shop (now closed). At each designated stop on the tour, you'll find a QR code. Simply hold your smart phone camera up to it, and a link will open, giving you expanded information on the history and sites around you. You can also skip those codes and find them later on this website.
If you listen and move straight through the tour with no interruptions or side trips, it should take you about an hour to complete. Below you will find a PDF of the tour map that you can print out and bring with you.
Throughout the tour you’ll find moments for interaction, touch, and sensory appreciation. We encourage you to bring a penny and a small piece of ribbon or string with you on your tour – you’ll hear moments in our story when you can use those items to leave your mark on Oakland. Finally, you can add to our rich collection of stories alive in our neighborhood by posting your OWN Oakland story, including a photo, here on our website.
